DOGMA

Romaji and English translation of the song DOGMA from the album DOGMA by the GazettE.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.
  • I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

DOGMA: Romaji

DOGMA: Translation

The façades are beginning to crumble
Sin is a deteriorating world
The teeming masses of society are the carcass of greed

I deny everything
I deny all of it
I deny everything

The rite I must face is cloaked in darkness and isolation
Only there will truth be found

I devour the dogma     of the frenzied mob
And overshadow them with “unadulterated blackness”

The personification of the idea     that to disobey God is to be cut from the flock
I’ll be a brain-dead god

Fated to crawl upon this earth     you dance with the darkness1
Your presumption is to become a false god

I’ve seen the manner in which greed dies
Of that point of view, there is no doubt.

[Crime]
Flock of puppets
Growing hate
I pity you
[Crime]
Hate your life
Flock of puppets
Growing hate

Overthrowing God     here we offer death

You voices beyond counting, come towards the sound of my hands clapping2
Let us become the darkness and idealize
A most perfect death

I will blacken out this world
Darkness in the world
Starts tonight

  1. He writes 舞え mae “to dance,” but sings 燃え moe “to burn, to get fired up.” I kept it as dance, but you could also consider this like, “You thrive on darkness / Darkness excites you.” Also, I loved how they timed this line up with Aoi’s creepy possessed-puppet dance in the PV, which is why I kept it as dance. Carry on.
  2. This is actually part of a saying used when playing a blindfolded version of tag. The person who is “it” (aka, the “ogre” or “demon”) has a blindfold on, and the other children basically call out, “鬼さんこちら、手の鳴る方へ” “Oni-san, kochira, te no naru hou he!” “Ogre-san, this way, come towards the sound of our clapping!” Basically, a dry-land version of Marco Polo (the swimming pool game where “it” has to close their eyes and try to find people by yelling “Marco!” and listening for responses of “Polo!”)
