UNTITLED

Romaji and English translation of the song UNTITLED from the album TOXIC and the compilation album TRACES VOL.2 BALLAD BEST by the GazettE.

The lyrics don’t appear to have been changed when they re-recorded the original song for TRACES VOL.2.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.
  • I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

UNTITLED1: Translation

You silently ignored all the excuses I made…
“I’d hoped2 for more, but you’re only clinging to me.”

―It’s easy to try to cover up those normal cracks with meaningless words, isn’t it?
But now I’m tired of forgiving your never-ending lies―

[―It’s easy to try to cover up those normal cracks with meaningless words, isn’t it?
But now I’m tired of forgiving your never-ending lies―]

Why do I repeat myself again?

Though my “bad habit” makes you sad, I’m still unable to say a word
Why do your tears hurt me like this when I’m the reason for them?

You try to look me in the eye but I stare at the floor, [avoiding your gaze]
All I can do is keep hugging my knees to my chest as you ask your questions3

―It’s easy to try to cover up those normal cracks with meaningless words, isn’t it?
But now I’m tired of forgiving your never-ending lies―

[―It’s easy to try to cover up those normal cracks with meaningless words, isn’t it?
But now I’m tired of forgiving your never-ending lies―]

Why do I repeat myself again?

Though my “bad habit” makes you sad, I’m still unable to say a word
Why do your tears hurt me like this when I’m the reason for them?

In my heart I saw this ending you once warned me about

Little by little, your usually unwavering smile fades away
I felt like I had touched your heart that is pulling away from me, little by little4

So that… I won’t have to hear your sadness anymore

I’ll quietly cover my ears

[And say goodbye]
So that you won’t be completely broken5

  1. This song and PLEDGE (the next track on TOXIC) are actually like a part 1 and part 2 of the same story: the couple are together in UNTITLED, but the guy doesn’t love the girl back the way she wants and keeps lying to her and generally being a jerk, so she finally has enough and breaks up with him. After losing her, he realizes he really did love her after all. So later, he finds her and apologizes, promises he’s changed after the pain of losing her and that he’ll never forget the way losing her felt so that it will never happen again, and they get back together in PLEDGE.

The sentences in quotes are what the girl is saying to him, and the parts in ―s are kind of echoes of what she said when she finally broke up with him that keeps going through his head.
  2. He actually wrote 夢 yume “dream.” This is the girl saying basically, it’s nice that he’s with her, but his heart isn’t in it and she knows it; she had hoped that one day he would return her feelings rather than just going through the motions.
  3. She’s trying to confront him, maybe get an answer as to why he keeps lying to her all the time, maybe an apology or an “I love you” – but all he can do is sit curled up in a ball staring at the floor so he doesn’t have to look into her eyes and see her tears.
  4. Now that she’s breaking up with him, it seems he’s thinking back and realizing he might have actually had feelings for her after all.
  5. And finally, he agrees that it’s best they go their separate ways, even though he now realizes his feelings – because he’s already caused her so much pain and he doesn’t want to hurt her more.
