MALUM

Romaji and English translation of the song MALUM from the single UNDYING by the GazettE.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.
  • I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

MALUM: Romaji

I saw the abyss
Like a nightmare

Jinkaku hatan      makka ni zubu nurete      oni magai
Musabetsu hidou      kiwamaru yoku no soko esoragoto sura nama nuruku
Inochi no nagori      bara makare

“Mou mitsukaranai taion”

Why did you KILL?
Though I lament
She can’t return

Hakidame no naka      ikon shitatari      kemono ni ochiru
Sono imi wo
I will never forget

Until you die / I will live
Until it KILLS you
Owarenai
I know
Until you die / I will live
Until I KILL you
“Shuuen1” me wo otoshi inore

Why did you KILL?
Though I lament
She can’t return

Hakidame no naka      ikon shitatari      kemono ni ochiru
Sono imi wo
I will never forget

Mou konnanimo ore wa

Until you die / I will live
Until it KILLS you
Owarenai
I know
Until you die / I will live
Until I KILL you
“Shuuen” me wo otoshi inore

Kaeshita shi ni nani omou?
Dokomademo tada hirogaru kyomu ni
Ikiru riyuu mo adatonaru

MALUM2: Translation

I saw the abyss
Like a nightmare

Morally bankrupt     and completely drenched in red     like a demon
In the indiscriminate     inhuman depths of extreme greed     even my fantasies are half-hearted
The shards of this life     are scattered

“Her3 body heat can’t be felt anymore”

Why did you KILL?
Though I lament
She can’t return

In a garbage heap,      I degenerate into a beast     dripping with malice
I will never forget
The meaning of it

Until you die / I will live
Until it KILLS you
It will never end
I know
Until you die / I will live
Until I KILL you
Pray as your eyes gaze down into the “abyss of death1

Why did you KILL?
Though I lament
She can’t return

In a garbage heap,      I degenerate into a beast     dripping with malice
I will never forget
The meaning of it

I’m already like this

Until you die / I will live
Until it KILLS you
It will never end
I know
Until you die / I will live
Until I KILL you
Pray as your eyes gaze down into the “abyss of death”

What do you think of the death I dealt you in retaliation?
The nothingness will continue to spread until everything [is covered]
And in it, even your reason for living brings you nothing but ruin

  1. It sounds like he’s saying 終えん shuuen “demise” and not 深淵 shinen “abyss” like he has written in the lyrics. So… I ended up compromising in the translation and including both words, because while “abyss” definitely fits, I am still like 99% certain he’s actually saying shuuen and not shinen here. So I just translated it as “abyss of death” and we’ll leave it at that.
  2. Malum means “evil, an offense against right.”
  3. There’s no pronoun here, and nothing to go on for context other than the rest of the song, so I went with “her” based on the “She can’t return” from the next stanza.
  4. Basically this song seems to be about taking revenge. The person he’s singing to has killed someone (either on purpose or through neglect on their part). The injustice and resentment of it is festering and turning the singer into a vengeful beast who is basically saying, “No matter where you go and no matter what you do, as long as you’re alive, know I’m coming for you. I won’t rest until you’re dead in return for what you did.”
