Akai WANPIISU

Romaji and English translation of the song 赤いワンピース (Akai WANPIISU) from the single Wakaremichi by the GazettE.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics in the translation.
  • Words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets].
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

Red Dress3: Translation

[Oh yeah!]

I’m4 more selfish than anybody else and I never follow any rules
Anyone who complains gets told off because I’m the self-appointed queen
Probably probably probably probably probably

Any guy who tries to put the moves on me must have a lot of guts
But for me, there’s only one who can be master of my heart
[He’s] my first and last love and I’d use any deceitful means to try to make him fall [for me]
Really, however, my true issue is… [I’m worried] I’m nowhere near skilled enough

Come over to my house and I’ll turn you into my complete and total slave
Even his face, already so full of lust is a lovely [sight]
This red lace dress is my special “pride [and joy]”.
That [dress] can turn even a gang of fierce criminals into begging fools [like] common dogs

I LOVED YOU SO MUCH IT HURT!!5
IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HUUURTS6!!

[I LOVED YOU SO MUCH IT HURT!!
IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HUUURTS!!]

[He’s] my first and last love and I’d use any deceitful means to try to make him fall [for me]
Really, however, my true issue is… [I’m worried] I’m nowhere near skilled enough
[For] our MEGA MEGA FUCKIN’ ○×△
But if his standards are so high, will he even take notice of my charms?
I wonder if eventually [he’ll think I’m] good enough to eat?
[For now] I’ll just lose myself in cigarette smoke and selfish pleasures
I acted like a queen, but it turns out I’m just one more “female”
This was just a bit of sweet playing around…
[But] his broad chest and oh, those eyes…
They’re simply my weakness, and make me melt melt melt
I want to be happy I want to be happy

I’ve been called so many hurtful things and regarded with such disgust that I eventually started hating myself
There’s nothing but regret left in my miserable liiiiife2

Translator’s Notes:

  1. He says something in the background during the pause between phrases that’s not in the lyrics.
  2. I know this looks weird, but he actually did write 残してぇぇぇぇ with the little ぇ e characters on the end extending the ending vowel sound on the final character て te.
  3. The word used in the title is ワンピース WANPIISU, which is transliterated as “ONEPIECE” – but in Japanese, “onepiece” is used in place of the word “dress.” (As in the article of clothing that is an attached top and skirt in one garment: or one piece, get it?) Since we don’t typically use the word “onepiece” in English (at least not where I’m from), I ended up translating the word instead of just transliterating it. Just wanted to explain that in case anyone was wondering.
  4. Given the use of あたし atashi, a version of “I” typically used by females; the use of わ wa and sometimes の no for emphasis at the end of a ton of sentences, and being the “self-appointed queen” – this song is written from the perspective of a female.
  5. There’s kind of a baby-ish or mocking sound to this line because of a minor play on words (er, syllables?). Normally it would be written 痛いくらい itai kurai to mean “so much it hurt(s)” – but he replaces the i sound at the end of both words with hi, which is part of an onomatopoeic term ひいひい hiihii meaning “waah, waah; cry like a baby.” So you can probably read this as exaggerated and whiny, or like, overly pouty/trying to be cute.
  6. Unlike the other note with the extra vowels added to a word in the original lyrics, this is a little different. This final line ends with の no which at the end of a sentence is a (typically) female way of adding additional emotional emphasis to a sentence. So the only way to express that in English I could think of was more u’s in the word. Goes with the whiny bit, anyway. LOL
