Akai WANPIISU

Romaji and English translation of the song 赤いワンピース (Akai WANPIISU) from the single Wakaremichi by the GazettE.

Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.

I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.

If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.

I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.

Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

He says something in the background during the pause between phrases that’s not in the lyrics.
I know this looks weird, but he actually did write 残してぇぇぇぇ with the little ぇ e characters on the end extending the ending vowel sound on the final character て te.
The word used in the title is ワンピース WANPIISU, which is transliterated as “ONEPIECE” – but in Japanese, “onepiece” is used in place of the word “dress.” (As in the article of clothing that is an attached top and skirt in one garment: or one piece, get it?) Since we don’t typically use the word “onepiece” in English (at least not where I’m from), I ended up translating the word instead of just transliterating it. Just wanted to explain that in case anyone was wondering.
Given the use of あたし atashi, a version of “I” typically used by females; the use of わ wa and sometimes の no for emphasis at the end of a ton of sentences, and being the “self-appointed queen” – this song is written from the perspective of a female.
There’s kind of a baby-ish or mocking sound to this line because of a minor play on words (syllables?). Normally it would be written 痛いくらい itai kurai to mean “so much it hurt(s)” – but he replaces the i sound at the end of both words with hi, which is part of an onomatopoeic term ひいひい hiihii meaning “waah, waah; cry like a baby.” So you can probably read this as exaggerated and whiny, or like, overly pouty/trying to be cute.
Unlike the other note with the extra vowels added to a word in the original lyrics, this is a little different. This final line ends with の no which at the end of a sentence is a (typically) female way of adding additional emotional emphasis to a sentence. So the only way to express that in English I could think of was more u’s in the word. Goes with the whiny bit, anyway. LOL
