Romaji and English translation of the song Back drop Junkie[nancy] by the GazettE from the multi-artist compilation album KALEIDOSCOPE.
- Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.
- I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
- If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.
- I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.
- Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

- He sings/yells/whatever you want to call it something in the background that is not written in the lyrics I found. I found a couple different opinions of what it might be on other Japanese lyric/fan sites, but as none of them are official, and they’re extremely different from each other, I opted not to include them at all.
- In the lyrics, 散らす chirasu “to scatter, to cause a shower of, to disperse” is written, while 零さ kobosa “to spill, to drop, to shed (tears), to complain” is sung.
- He sings “kill” here.
- According to interviews, the song refers to Nancy Spungen, girlfriend of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious. Both Sid and Nancy were notorious drug users, and she ended up dead in their apartment, stabbed to death, with Sid charged for her murder. However, he died of an overdose while on bail awaiting trial, so the case was never tried.
Also, according to Ruki, this was originally a Ma’die Küsse song (one of the bands Ruki, Reita, and Uruha were in together – with different stage names – before the GazettE, and in which Ruki was the drummer and not the singer). - She’s huffing paint thinner to get high.
- This refers to オロナミンC / ORONAMIN C, an energy drink that’s been around in Japan since the 60s. Apparently in the 80’s the company had to change their bottles from a screw-top cap to a single use, non-resealable pop top after both an incident of tampered drinks being sold, as well as a child welfare activist stating that the bottles were being used to huff paint thinner. More info.
The word right after this, 喰らう kurau means “to eat/drink; to receive (as in a blow)” – normally I would translate it as “drink,” but taking into consideration the paint thinner, I’d say more like “using” because you don’t drink it, though it is in a bottle. - Since she’s slurring her words because she’s high, he wrote 「あタヒ 誰ラノ?」 “aTAHI dare RA NO?” – so like mixed-case between hiragana and katakana, and saying wrong syllables (hi instead of shi, ra instead of na). This would most likely be 「私、誰なの?」 “(w)atashi, dare nano?” or “Who am I?” I put the extra letters/mixed case in to try to make her sound stoned like she did in the original.
