Romaji and English translation of the song 疼く痣と歪む裏 (Uzuku aza to yugamu ura) from the single reila by the GazettE.
- Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.
- I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
- If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.
- I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.
- Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

Throbbing Bruises and a Twisted Personality: Translation
What you did is too indecent; it’s setting my impulses on edge
[But] I’m only pretending to drown, so hey…
“Swaying, swaying, we’ll sway some more;” let’s dance
Your bored-looking face your
indifferent-sounding voice
At least pretend you feel something
“Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey…”
I can’t break free from your underhanded tactics
I no longer want to break free so
“Swaying, swaying, we’ll sway some more;” let’s dance
Noticing your distant feelings I’d avert my eyes
Your unbalanced past and wounds [caused by] indecision
Those bothersome things packed so tight [inside you] there’s no space left
[They] break me down in my distress
Why are you still watching for him, the one without a shadow?4
Why do you always hide your wounds from me?
My voice can’t reach the darkness in you, and simply dies out
Now you’re trembling from that pain but “I’m nothing but a stand-in…”5
I can’t break free from your underhanded tactics
I no longer want to break free so
“Swaying, swaying, we’ll sway some more;” let’s dance
I wonder what I really was to you
This incomprehensible situation is [forever] etched into my vision
The sight of you dangling there6 makes me feel like I’m going to be sick
Your mute farewell pierces through my [heart]
That heartbroken face isn’t an act at all
So this was the real you that you never showed me
I had been so jealous but I’ll let it all go
[Even] the hatred for the guy she was in love with
Why are you still watching for him, the one
without a shadow?
Why do you always
hide your wounds from me?
My voice can’t reach the darkness in you, and
simply dies
Now you’re still trembling from that pain
I knew our love was just for show with no substance but
Touching you, holding you just laughing a bit with you
It was like a dream and at that moment I knew happiness
But now you and ‘that guy’ without a shadow are laughing at me, the fool7
- He writes 不感 fukan which is not a word by itself, but the beginning of 不感症 fukanshou “sexual frigidity; insensitivity, indifference.”
- Throughout the song, 彼女 kanojo “she/her” is written, but 君 kimi “you (familiar form)” is sung. There’s only one part where he writes 彼女 and actually sings it as that.
- 現実 genjitsu “reality, fact” is written, while 今 ima “now, the present” is sung.
- The guy loves his girlfriend, but she seems to be hung up on a past love (I’m assuming dead since he says he “has no shadow”).
- The word used here is 形 katachi “form, shape, figure.” Again, since she’s hung up on her former love, he wants to comfort her and have her open her heart to him, but she’s basically treating him like a warm body rather than an actual boyfriend she cares about. This is kind of like, “I know you don’t really love me, and you’re just using me as a poor substitute for him.”
- She committed suicide by hanging herself.
- ‘That guy’ is in quotes/partial italics for emphasis because he wrote it differently in this one line compared to everywhere else he talked about him. Usually, he used あいつ aitsu “that guy/person, him” but here he said アイツ aitsu in kana. Usually when he switches like this it’s to indicate a change in attitude towards the person or a change in the way he’s speaking to/about them.
Also, he’s basically saying, “I was stupid for staying with you even though I knew you weren’t really in love with me. Now you two are together again (in death) and laughing at me for being such an idiot.” ☹
