Defective Tragedy

Romaji and English translation of the song Defective Tragedy from the single Hyena by the GazettE.

Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.

I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.

If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.

I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.

Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

This kanji 無傷 read together as a compound is pronounced mukizu, which means unhurt/uninjured, but he pronounces the second kanji 傷 shou which appears in kanji compounds meaning the exact opposite: “bruise/wound (ranging from minor to fatal depening on the first kanji used)/injury/burn” or “sorrow/grief.” 無 mu separately means “un-“. So… it still means “unhurt/uninjured” – just in a roundabout way.
He writes 頭 / atama but pronounces it as the English definition “head.”
Same deal, he writes 唇 / kuchibiru but pronounces English translation “lip(s).”
暗示 anji means “hint or trace;” I translated it as “clear or see-through” (like the jewel-case of a CD) because it’s there, and you know it’s there, but you can only see it if you’re at the right angle or bump into it.
I’m taking 黒い kuroi in this instance to mean “black” as in “bruised” not literally “the color black.” Sounds like someone got into a hell of a fight.
書く kaku means “to write/compose/draw;” I chose a word with a similar feel – think carving something onto a surface with a sharp instrument as opposed to just writing with a pen. Given the “Melancholy and razor play” line, he probably means trying to cut himself (self-harm) with a dull knife.
In the kanji version of the lyrics, there is an extra word that he doesn’t appear to pronounce, 偽 (gi) which is “falsehood/lie.” If you don’t look at the kanji and just go by the romaji, it’s more like “as useless as your mouth.”
