VERMIN

Romaji and English translation of the song VERMIN from the single Red by the GazettE.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics in the translation.
  • Words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets].
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

VERMIN3: Translation

Beneath my     Black Fur     Mask is a trap     but you continued dancing
As the rope around your neck forcibly tightens

Your madness hasn’t changed by a millimeter, so I pour out my Rage as you hang

I laugh as you lap up trivial LIEs     with those still-glazed eyes
If you’d realized, you would have cleansed your mind [of this]     RONDO2 of betrayal
How badly do they cut you?     your tight bonds      Answer me, Vermin
Moron4, you didn’t even notice      the casual bullet wound [I gave you] three minutes ago

Your madness hasn’t changed by a millimeter, so I pour out my Rage as you hang

Dance
Fall down…Mr.Vermin…Last show
Your mind is dragged along behind this extravagantly brutal rampage
Dance
Fall down…Mr.Vermin…Last show
The restraints break and now it’s funny     when I look back, you’re [lying there] like a corpse
Serves you right

[How badly do they cut you?     your tight bonds      Answer me, Vermin
Moron, you didn’t even notice      the casual bullet wound [I gave you] three minutes ago]

Long ago you betrayed my trust
My dreams were far too disturbing to bear
Even now my mind clings to them, won’t let them go
I need to cut them loose before I’m smothered by them

Dance
Fall down…Mr.Vermin…Last show
Your mind is dragged along behind this extravagantly brutal rampage
[Dance
Fall down…Mr.Vermin…Last show]
The restraints break and now it’s funny     when I look back, you’re [lying there] like a corpse

A disgusting insect who feels no guilt should be smashed without hesitation5

Good bye Mr.Vermin

Translator’s Notes:

  1. 1mm (1 millimeter)
  2. He pronounces 輪舞 / rinbu as “rondo,” one of the definitions. A rondo is a form of musical refrain, usually allegro (fast and lively) that contains one or more contrasting themes that repeat in a pattern.  Rinbu can also mean “a whirling, circular dance” – so basically think a fast, repetitive, kind of lunatic-looking dance. It brings to mind the myth behind the tarantella, where the victim of a venomous spider bite was forced to dance to rapid music nonstop to avoid succumbing to the venom; a second version of the myth states that those bitten danced because of the venom – its toxin forced them to convulse in such a way that it looked like they were manically dancing.
  3. “Vermin” is kind of a catch-all category of animals/insects considered distasteful, disgusting, unclean, disease-carrying, etc. Think rats, cockroaches, fleas, flies, lice, mice, etc. The fact that this guy’s nickname is “Mr.Vermin” doesn’t speak well of his character as a human being.
  4. He uses 己 onore here, which can be a derogatory way to say “you.” (It can also be a humble “I/me,” but since he already used the considerably-less-humble 俺 ore to refer to himself in an earlier line, that’s not what it is here.)  I translated it as “moron” in this case because he’s basically calling him an idiot for not even noticing he’s been shot – like this guy still he has no idea he’s being attacked, he just keeps on acting the way he always does.
  5. So this song was tough because there were basically NO pronouns in the Japanese parts except for one 俺 ore – a typically male, kind of ‘rough/tough,’ pronoun for “I/me” – early on (“I laugh as you lap up trivial LIEs”) and an 己 onore that’s repeated twice – a derogatory pronoun for “you” (see the note above). The way I translated the song, the person singing (because of the ore, I’m guessing male – this note is confusing because of all the he/hims, sorry) was hurt by someone he refers to as “Mr.Vermin” (“Long ago you betrayed my trust”) – his use of onore also tells how he feels about him. The singer feels like he’s being smothered by recurring nightmares of what Mr.V did to him, so if he doesn’t get rid the source of those nightmares, he’ll never be free. He lures him in to get his revenge (the black fur mask hiding a trap while he puts a noose around Mr.V’s neck); and since Mr.V obviously hasn’t changed since he betrayed the singer (“Your madness hasn’t changed by a millimeter”), he doesn’t feel bad about taking Mr.V out. He considers him no more than a worthless insect who needs to be crushed because Mr.V feels no remorse for what he did.  In fact, given how clueless Mr.V seems to be about what’s going on, he probably has no idea he even hurt the singer to begin with; he probably just always runs roughshod over everybody as part of his normal not-very-nice and less-than-completely-sane personality.
