VENOMOUS SPIDER’S WEB

Romaji and English translation of the song VENOMOUS SPIDER’S WEB from the album TOXIC by the GazettE.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.
  • I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

VENOMOUS SPIDER’S WEB: Romaji

PAIN-GRUDGE-SORROW-FURY
DELETE-HEADACHE-HANG UP-DIZZY

Ito wo hawasu gokusaishiki no wana de
Haitokukan wo kiserareta mama

“Aisou yoku waratte kurenai ka?”
MOZAIKU no saki dechira tsukasu kebakebashii yaiba

[PAIN-GRUDGE-SORROW-FURY
DELETE-HEADACHE-HANG UP-DIZZY]

[PAIN]
Like a bacteria
You repeat an increase
Like a bacteria
The spider which undermines me

BETABETA to karamitsuku moudoku ni
Marude hone no zui made shaburi tsukusareteru you sa

Mischief of the venomous spider
Delete this deadly poison
Mischief of the venomous spider
Sono doku wa mitsuyori amai no sa

[PAIN-GRUDGE-SORROW-FURY
DELETE-HEADACHE-HANG UP-DIZZY]

[PAIN
Like a bacteria
You repeat an increase
Like a bacteria
The spider which undermines me]

This is skillful trap
Delete this deadly poison
Like a bacteria
The spider which undermines me

Perfect trap…
Delete this deadly poison

VENOMOUS SPIDER’S WEB1: Translation

PAIN-GRUDGE-SORROW-FURY
DELETE-HEADACHE-HANG UP-DIZZY

The brightly-colored web of entangling threads
Concealed a state of corruption and immorality [beneath]

“Won’t you smile sweetly for me?”
The mosaic2 obscures the glint of your glittering knife-edge

[PAIN-GRUDGE-SORROW-FURY
DELETE-HEADACHE-HANG UP-DIZZY]

[PAIN]
Like a bacteria
You repeat an increase
Like a bacteria
The spider which undermines me

The clinging deadly venom coils around me
Consuming me until it seems as if it’s sucked into the very marrow of my bones3

Mischief of the venomous spider
Delete this deadly poison
Mischief of the venomous spider
Your poison is sweeter than honey

[PAIN-GRUDGE-SORROW-FURY
DELETE-HEADACHE-HANG UP-DIZZY]

[PAIN
Like a bacteria
You repeat an increase
Like a bacteria
The spider which undermines me]

This is skillful trap
Delete this deadly poison
Like a bacteria
The spider which undermines me

Perfect trap…
Delete this deadly poison

  1. According to interviews, this song is about the digital world and the Internet (aka, the web).
  2. I think mosaic here is both literal (as in the pixelated squares used to censor images/video), as well as figurative – meaning on the surface, everything looks brightly-colored and safe, but lurking underneath is darkness and danger.
  3. I had a hard time with this line, because it seems like there’s maybe a play on words? He uses the word 随 which has an onyomi reading of zui, which means “obey; follow; though; during; submit to; comply; at the mercy of,” etc. But zui written as 髄 (different left-most radical; actually the radical for the character meaning “bone” is used, but the other radicals are all the same) means “marrow, pith, essence.” This word is combined with 骨の_ hone no _ meaning “_ of the bone” (the kanji for hone is the same radical on the second reading of zui I mentioned).

Bearing that in mind, I feel like it’s maybe a play on words referencing the way the venom/poison (referring to the dangerously alluring aspects of digital life) is coiling itself so tightly around his bones that it’s infecting the very core itself and he’s at its mercy.
