Machibouke no kouen de…

Romaji and English translation of the song 待ちぼうけの公園で… (Machibouke no kouen de…) from the single Gozen 0-ji no torauma RAJIO by the GazettE.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.
  • I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

In the Park Where You Waited in Vain…: Translation

[“The clock has struck midnight.  It’s time for the radio show.  So please, sit back and listen.”]

Your voice calls out my name as the sun slowly sinks over the park
[I wish I could say] “Sorry I’m late” but even those few words
I can’t convey I can’t convey2

I kept watching your profile as you waited until it finally got too dark [to see]
I couldn’t even say goodbye
I couldn’t even say goodbye

Just try to forget about me; you’ll be sad [for a while] but soon you’ll get used to [being without me]
I wanted to hold you one more time before the end but now I can’t even express the way I feel

As surely as the end-of-September wind is piercing there’s no doubt that I love you
If only God would grant my wish: even just a second would be enough

The two people burned into that photograph
(When I don’t ever return, your memories will move on)
Are you and the person you were destined to be with
(I’ll hide my tears until the day I can call out to you)

You think you think you’ll never ever be able to forget about me
So you just keep on crying and crying under that big cherry tree

Being all by yourself is scary and I can’t stand seeing you cry
I’m still here I’m right here so you aren’t all alone

Your voice calls out my name as the sun slowly sinks over the park
[I wish I could say] ‘I still love you’ but even those few words
I can’t convey I can’t convey

Your voice, so very small and hoarse [from crying]
(Please give me the same smile you had on that day)
Is burned [into me] like the writing on that photograph
(But overcome with emotion, you can’t hold back your tears)

You think you’ll never ever be able to forget about me
So you just keep on crying and crying under that big cherry tree

You, you’re still the same nothing, nothing has changed
So you just keep on waiting and waiting for me under that big cherry tree

You murmured to yourself over and over
While flipping through that album full of memories
I watched until you cried yourself to sleep

We made so many memories under that big cherry tree
Where I watched you as you waited for me to return

  1. This is spoken at the beginning of the song after the tones but isn’t written in any version of the lyrics that I found. (I had to use one of the smaller, less-frequented kanji databases for this one and confirmed the lyrics on several others as well.) I’m pretty sure of everything except the toou in the last line… I think that’s what he says, anyway!
  2. The actual phrase is 届きません todokimasen which can be “to (not) reach/arrive/get through/be delivered.”  I went more with the “can’t get through/can’t be delivered” translation – he wants to say that, but he can’t.

(As to why he can’t, there isn’t an official statement on this song as far as I know.  The suggestion I’ve seen that makes the most sense to me is that it seems like it might have been a couple who were separated by war.  She’s waiting for him to return as he promised, but he died in battle.  Now his spirit is watching her wait for him in the park, which makes sense why he’s hanging around watching her and she doesn’t know he’s there and he can’t call out to her like he wants to.)

This word comes up in this song a lot and I treat it the same way throughout.
