Romaji of the song ワイフ (WAIFU) from the single Gozen 0-ji no torauma RAJIO, the EP Akuyuukai, and the compilation album Dainippon itangeishateki noumisou (gyaku) kaiten zekkyou ongenshuu by the GazettE.
This is the original version of the lyrics, NOT the Akuyuukai / Dainippon…(gyaku)…ongenshuu version.
- Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.
- I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
- If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.
- I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.
- Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

WIFE: Translation
I’m just your typical selfish domestic type…
[But] that’s not to say I’m an introvert; when I sleep around, [it’s thanks to] my sex-loving personality
I’m just your typical no-good kind of person
A gutter-minded pervert [starring in] a first-rate PORNO “LATE SHOW”
[I’m your typical selfish domestic type…
[But] that’s not to say I’m an introvert; when I sleep around, [it’s thanks to] my sex-loving personality
[I’m just your typical no-good kind of person
A gutter-minded pervert [starring in] a first-rate PORNO “LATE SHOW”]
On that day, at that time, in that place, I came across that girl with the short haircut
With memories of a distant sadness writhing in the pupils of her small black eyes
I call her over in a vulgar tone, and we join together our pain and discomfort
Did you assume I was a bad guy just because I like things that feel good?
It’s not like I have some hidden agenda2
On that day, at that time, in that place, I came across that girl with the bloodshot eyes
She looked up at me, who was pretending to be a good person, and wished for my unhappiness OK…
I call her over in a vulgar tone, and we join together our pain and discomfort
I guess we had to split because I hated your innocence
Do I need to shake you to shut that annoying, chatty mouth?
I could hear her [as she lay] at my feet. “I trusted you,” she said. “I was happy with you.”
In the end, I’m just how I always am; anyway, it’s just because I’m a stereotypical Type B3…
This is one of only a few songs whose lyrics were basically completely rewritten from one release to the next. Two versions of both the music and the lyrics exist – the original being from the Gozen 0-ji no torauma RAJIO single (and seen in the PV above) and the other from the Akuyuukai EP / Dainippon compilation album. I presume the song was rewritten and re-recorded because they released the EP/compilation album after the original drummer, Yune, left the band and Kai joined. (In fact, they don’t have anything pre-Kai listed in their discography on their own website.)
- Something is shouted/sung in the background that’s not in the lyrics.
- Basically, the guy in the song just wants to bang, and the girl wants a relationship. It sounds like he told her this from the get-go (or else assumed she knew because of the crass pick-up line), and ends up annoyed that she’s being clingy even though he told her he just wanted to hook up.
I also feel like the title “WIFE” is kind of an exasperated nod to how this girl is acting like they’re “together” – like, “All I want is to sleep with you but now you’re acting like we’re married or something.” - This refers to the long-held Japanese belief that blood types and personalities are connected. The theory even goes so far as to list compatibility of people of certain blood types in relationships with one another. More information on Japanese blood types and personalities here.
