Mayakashi

Romaji and English translation of the song 瞞し (Mayakashi) from the single BEFORE I DECAY by the GazettE.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics in the translation.
  • Words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets].
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

Deception: Translation

Sometimes I feel so empty I claw at my skin     until my throat2 feels raw
Opening my eyes, I swallowed as if in a trance;     I slowly begin to break apart

My doubts should have been chased away…

It is unquestionably dull
Merely embracing one another is meaningless

The dancing cherry blossoms have forgotten their colors,    as yet unable to change
I never searched for anything      so that I could continue to forget

Because I’ve known betrayal
I had to face profound lies
Until I could [finally] sleep

I only act the part of misery     [but my] arrogance     continues on
I was not even able to see the hand reaching out to me
I blow kisses to deception, I allow myself to be hurt
But I realize that once again there’s no one here…

I don’t want to search for answers in the silence that washes over me
I want to pretend the end is but a momentary escape

The separation is obscured by nothing but a simple laugh
What was left was much too sad
The narrowing distance blocks my way every time
Far too subdued and cold

Like flower petals that change colors
If the time comes, remember
Like flower petals that fade and wilt
Even if the time comes, don’t forget

I only act the part of misery     [but my] arrogance     continues on
I was not even able to see the hand reaching out to me
I blow kisses to deception, I allow myself to be hurt
But I realize that once again there’s no one here…

There’s no one here…
There’s no one here…

Translator’s Notes:

  1. 接吻 / seppun is written, but the English meaning “kiss” is sung.
  2. He writes 喉舌, but those two kanji together are not a compound. The first kanji used,喉 kou is used in compounds relating to the throat (larynx, epiglottis, etc.). Kouzetsu as a whole word can be written either 後舌 (“rear part of the tongue”) or 口舌 (“manner of speaking”) – given the first kanji, I assume he was intending the “back of tongue/throat” reading.
