Wakaremichi

Romaji and English translation of the song 別れ道 (Wakaremichi) from the EP SPERMARGARITA and the single Wakaremichi by the GazettE.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.
  • I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

Parting Ways: Translation

I love you but even so     it’s time for us to part
We did nothing but fight every single day.
From now on I have to live on my own
I’m not gonna cry anymore…

The truth is, it’s really tough and it’s painful and I’m lonely
But I want to act strong around you
So I’m sorry, but     I’ll be smiling all the way until the end     and I’m an idiot
Because despite [my smile] all I really want to do is cry

I saw all those expressions cross your face     and instantly I understood.
It wasn’t that we didn’t like each other anymore, but
Rather than continue living while having lost sight of each other
Saying “Do your best,” and going our separate ways
Each walking in our own direction…

Goodbye,     see you,     take care, OK?
I’ll never     ever     forget you
Goodbye,     surely     one day we’ll meet again right?
It’s a promise! We’ll both pinky swear4

July 8th was our three month anniversary     do you remember?
Back when we first met
You were hanging your head and seemed embarrassed because
You’d been crying…

The way we used to have fun     every day
Although it was short     I was happy     I was happy and yet…

[I saw all those expressions cross your face     and instantly I understood.
It wasn’t that we didn’t like each other anymore, but
Rather than continue living while having lost sight of each other
Saying “Do your best,” and going our separate ways
Each walking in our own direction…     (tearfully) is it really OK? ]

We’ll both pinky swear

For just a little longer     don’t release     our linked pinky fingers
If     in time     a day comes when we can laugh again
We won’t pass each other by…
If     in time     a day comes when we can laugh again

3If I face you     I’d have to show you my tears
So I turned around and waved my hand     I will never forget you.
Don’t ever change, OK?     I love you just the way you are…

[Goodbye,     see you,     take care, OK?
I’ll never     ever     forget you
Goodbye,     surely     one day we’ll meet again right?
It’s a promise! We’ll both pinky swear]

Goodbye,     see you,     take care, OK?
Goodbye,     surely     one day      we’ll meet again, right?
You’re the one I love     and you’re so important to me
But you’ll turn into only memories     and it makes me so sad
I’m so depressed I feel like I want to die;     your voice will never leave my head!

I read in an interview (I forget where; it was forever ago) that they’re not going to play this song live again until their very last show.

  1. He wrote 日 hi “day” according to the online kanji lyric databases, but it sounds like he sings 時 toki “time, occasion, chance, opportunity, the day.”
  2. I don’t think he sings this word – it’s in parenthesis originally, so I think it’s just a note in the lyrics to show the emotion of the line.
  3. This part is written in the lyrics on all the kanji lyric databases I checked. It’s actually between the last verse and the ending chorus, but it isn’t sung at all, so I moved it to the end of the romaji part so it wouldn’t be in the way when singing along (I added a footnote to where it goes, as well as before the unsung section). I kept it where it was originally in the translation, and I put it in a different font color in both places as well.
  4. Both 指きり yubikiri and げんかん genkan mean the same thing – “make a promise by linking little fingers together.” In English, we just call it “pinky swear.” Since he basically wrote it twice, I just translated it as “let’s both do this,” even though you obviously need two people to pinky swear anyway.  The last frames of the PV show them holding their pinkies together in a pinky swear before she pulls away.
