GUSH

Romaji and English translation of the song GUSH from the album NINTH by the GazettE.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics in the translation.
  • Words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets].
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

GUSH: Translation

The thing that’s reflected in my eyes is
A widescreen puppet1
But I wonder if you’re actually something more
You’ve adapted to feeling out of place
By wearing the world’s view of Normal
Spouting out whatever you think they want to hear

Gush over2  you made good use of your eyes3
Gush over  since you’re being judged by their rules
Gush over  when you turn to face them, they’re dazzled
Gush over  [they offer you] mindless wild applause

This high-end [life] is lively
Compared to the one you had before
But the impressive illusion is crumbling
The uninspired solution of most of the world      is just to Buzz
Swarming to gather the sweet nectar [you provide]

Gush over  you turned and lavished them with your Vogue4 performance
Gush over  they’d devour it even if it wasn’t allowed
Gush over  with an adoring look in their eyes
Gush over  [offering] mindless wild applause

Today you’re adrift, alone, in a swamp that can’t be completely disguised5
Your celebrity is only an illusion     of breaking free and escaping to beauty

Your crumbling illusion is Dope

Gush over  you turned and lavished them with your Vogue performance
Gush over  they’d devour it even if it wasn’t allowed
Gush over  with an adoring look in their eyes
Gush over  [offering] mindless wild applause
Gush over  you made good use of your eyes
Gush over  since you’re judged by their rules
Gush over  when you turn to face them, they’re dazzled
Gush over  [they offer you] mindless wild applause

Today you’re still alone in the swamp that can’t be completely disguised
Despite that, you still seem like a decent person
No matter what popular opinion may say

  1. He actually wrote 16:9 in the lyrics. This is the most common aspect ratio for widescreen TVs and computer monitors since 2009, as well as the international standard for broadcasting HD and widescreen analog TV. (Fun fact, the most common aspect ratio for mobile phone screens is the same, but flipped vertical – 9:16.)
  2. I’d consider this to mean “You’re giving them everything they want and more” or something similar to that.
  3. He’s good at judging exactly what the people want, and camouflaging himself to fit their demands.
  4. Vogue means “now, state-of-the-art, ‘all the rage,’” etc.
  5. I can’t for the life of me think of a better way to say this in a short sentence. Basically, the person is in a fake world that’s meant to look pretty, but it’s a thin disguise because if you look really closely and kind of squint a little, you can still tell they’re really standing in something sludgy and muddy and gross. (So reality is not as beautiful as the fake world he’s trying to sell to stay on top/remain popular.)
  6. The song seems to be about someone in the entertainment industry, and how they have to keep up appearances and do what people expect of them (hence “widescreen puppet” – a puppet of the masses who appears onscreen in some fashion, be it musician or actor or whatever), and in return they’re lavished with praise and adoration. But the unvarnished reality is that the life they’re living is not nearly as pretty as it seems. But despite all the fake smiles and giving the people what they want, the singer says he still seems like a nice guy – even if the public happens to turn on him later.
