Worthless War

Romaji and English translation of the song Worthless War from the single REGRET by the GazettE.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.
  • I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

Worthless War

I know last days

By bomb of autocracy
The smile of people dies
By Dirty hand of autocracy
The black sphere is turning

Yarareru mae ni uchinuku no ka
Sore wo yatsu wa seigi to yobu no ka
Onore ni kakaru chi     onore de nuguezu
A sacrifice is countless
Nageku mono ni sukui no te dasazu
Kahogo ni nemuri gizen to koubi
Yatsu wa orokana heiwa no shouchou

Honor…glory
Komaku ni nokoru bakugekioto ga
Nemurenu yoru wo kyoufushin ni kaeta
Musubu te to te     tsune ni koushou
Shaku ni sawareba tsukkomu
Taepodong
Yaburi suteta
(A)nti-(B)allistic(M)issile(T)reaty1
Nido to gomen da
Nine eleven
But naku no wa shimen dake sa
Oubou na shudan ga maneku wa zetsubou
despair [desu]

Taihaishita chi     yake kogeta kage
Gisei no sakebi wa yamanu
Furisosogu hai     ubawareta asu ni
Namida sae nagasanu kuse ni

Worthless war continues…
KBK sleep on a bed…
Worthless war continues…
commit suicide and compensate people.

Worthless War: Translation

I know last days

By bomb of autocracy2
The smile of people dies
By Dirty hand of autocracy
The black sphere is turning

Do you shoot first so you won’t get hurt?
Do you call that sort of thing ‘justice’?
You3 can’t wash away     the blood you spill
A sacrifice is countless
You don’t offer help to those who are suffering
But expend all your energy on idle hypocrisy and rutting like an animal4
You’re a poor representation of peace

Honor…glory
The sound of the explosions that linger in my ears
Transform the night into one of sleepless terror
[Forming] alliances, hand in hand     constantly negotiating
We’ll be plunged right back into Taepodong5 at the slightest offense
Defying the abandoned (A)nti-(B)allistic(M)issile(T)reaty1
We never want there to be another Nine eleven6
But all the public does is wail
Violent tactics only invite despair
[This is] despair

The very earth has become corrupted,     a shadow scorched by desperation
The screams of the victims will never end
Ash rains down in sheets     in the future that was stolen away
Just like tears that flow without ceasing

Worthless war continues…
KBK7 sleep on a bed…
Worthless war continues…
commit suicide and compensate people.

The corrupted earth     still remains
And meaningless are the scars carved [into its surface]
Memories, drenched by contaminated rain8
Give birth to nothing but worthless strife

Worthless war continues…

  1. He only sings “ABMT” – but the meaning of the abbreviation was included in all the kanji lyrics databases I checked. More on the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.
  2. Autocracy is “a system of government ruled by one person with absolute power; domineering rule or control” – so a dictatorship, despotism, tyranny, etc.
  3. Both the “you” pronouns in this sentence are written with 己 onore, a derogatory way of talking to someone.
  4. The word used is 交尾 koubi which is “mating (as in animals)” – I chose to use “rutting,” which is a verb often used when comparing someone’s ah, love/style/frequency of copulation to that of a beast. It’s kind of in the sense of “mindlessly seeking your own pleasure/release” versus, say, “making love.”
  5. This is either referring to a North Korean missile (Taepodong-1 test-fired in 1998 or Taepodong-2 test-fired in 2006) or the facility from which the missiles are launched, Musudan-ri in an area known as Taepo-dong.
  6. This is pretty obviously referring to the attacks on the United States (World Trade Center / the Pentagon / United Airlines Flight 93) on September 11, 2001 – collectively referred to as “9/11.”
  7. I honestly have no clue. My knee-jerk guess is this is short for “kill or be killed.”

There are a few references to other things online that I was able to find with the acronym KBK (mostly rail stations, football clubs, a gang in New York, an Indian news network, and a Japanese company – Kyokuto Boeki Kaisha Ltd, that does import/export of machinery/equipment relating to aircraft and a bunch of other stuff like bridges and communication systems), but… IDK, man.
  8. 黒い雨 kuroi ame or literally “black rain” also means “heavily polluted; radioactive rain caused after an atmospheric nuclear explosion.” This phenomenon is also referred to as “nuclear rainout” (as opposed to nuclear fallout, where particles simply fall from the sky as dust).
