SENCHIMENTARU na onigokko

Romaji and English translation of the song センチメンタルな鬼ごっこ (SENCHIMENTARU na onigokko) from the single Wakaremichi by the GazettE.

Translator's Notes
  • Lyrics originally sung in English are in italics , and words or phrases I felt were implied are in [brackets] in the translation.
  • I also (usually) put repeats of chorus/verses/stanzas in [brackets] if they’re not written that way in the original lyrics for ease of singing along.
  • If he writes a word in the lyrics but doesn’t sing it, I put it in light grey to make it easier to skip when singing along.
  • I usually romajize katakana characters in CAPITALS, and keep punctuation and line spacing as close to the original booklet as possible. If you see me putting spaces before punctuation at the end of a sentence or writing things in mixed-case capitals, that’s because it’s how it was in the booklet.
  • Any comments I had during the romajization/translation process will be included as footnotes so as not to disturb the flow of the song. They’re not required reading, but Ruki does some pretty nifty things with his lyrics/kanji choices, or sometimes there’s further explanations about words or phrases in there.

A Sentimental Game of Tag: Translation

Aaaahhhh.
I’m a gloomy kid with glasses
And as for the girl I like who I’m pining after, I…
AAAAHHHH.

2[Good evening,
this is the news at 6:00.
Early in the morning on the 13th of this month, in the Tokyo Metropolitan area,
12-year-old ×××-kun,
a student at the ×× Second Primary School,
attempted suicide after
several female classmates allegedly
attacked him and beat him up.
An [investigation] has been called to look into the incident.
The school has flatly denied the incident took place.]

Once more today takes pictures of that girl’s ○○○,
Kneeling with the camera to get spectacular shots
With a perfect R rating!?
Please keep me company until it gets dark
Please touch me any way you like
Until she’s pleased
Let’s enjoy our moment of climax
In ECSTASY MODE

Always, always, alllways3
Everyone gangs up
To attack me
Don’t make that face!

The glow of the sunset stings my eyes
I want to fall in love so dramatically
But you just can’t say
I love you, I love you to platonic me

[Always, always, alllways3
Everyone gangs up
To attack me
Don’t make that face!]

I really should have known from the start that
My feelings are just pretentious and uncontrollable
And though it makes me sad, I [know] I’ll come to hate you
I try to forget, I try to forget [so often]
No matter how many times I tried I could never do it

Even if all she does is make fun of me,
It would still make me really happy
Though it hurt, it hurt so much I thought I would cry,
I was so happy I could just pass out

Sunset’s glow around 5PM
I’m singing to the girl who turned her back on me5
I love you, I love you from the bottom of my heart
I’ll wait, with my hands over my ears

Very few times has a song made me want to throw my computer while even trying to simply romajize it. With all the different funky symbols, the bleeps and sound effects, like 8 different vocal tracks with weird special effects overlapping, and things added to or not sung from the lyrics I have to work with, I’m just… Bruh.  I must have rewound parts of this song like 50 times.  BTW, any weird symbols in the lyrics are censored bleeps or static in the song.

  1. It sounds like he says に ni here, but が ga is written in the lyrics I found. (I had to go to one of my less-frequently-used kanji lyric databases for this one; the major ones I usually refer to didn’t even have this song at all. Just bear in mind that my translation is based on what was written there since I didn’t have access to the original booklet.)

OK, truth time, this song has SO MANY things he adds that weren’t in the lyrics, or are in the lyrics but he doesn’t say. As usual, things added that weren’t written are in brackets, and things written but not sung are in grey, but again, no original booklet so I’m not like 100% positive. Sorry. I did my best. ☹
  2. From what I understand, this is not included in the original printed lyrics, but this is what’s spoken in the background of the song. It’s a news report about the boy in the song, but whether it’s an old report (meaning he’s grown up now) or a current one (meaning he’s a kid) is unclear.

Also, he says this so frigging fast and overlapping himself a couple times that I gave up proofreading it, so I hope it’s what he’s actually saying; it’s definitely right based on the lyrics on the database, but again – not in the original lyrics, so I’m not completely positive. At least you get the gist?
  3. He added a っ to extend the way the final いつも itsumo is being said – it’s just basically holding it. Like, “alllways” instead of “always.”
  4. IDK man, whatever’s sung here isn’t in the lyrics I have. I could guess what he’s saying but I’d probably be wrong, so I won’t bother. LOL
  5. Lyrics say 指 yubi “finger(s)”, but it sounds like he’s saying 背 se “back/spine; reverse/rear side.” Combined with 向けて mukete which can either be “to turn towards” or “to point,” it means this line could be translated two different ways, written or sung. So I translated as it was sung, but if you did it the way it was written, it could also be “Pointing my finger, I’m singing to that girl.”
  6. He actually writes あの子 ano ko, “that kid,” throughout the song, but since he (and the news report) referred to the bully as being a girl, I went with “her.”
  7. The verb here is 弄って ijitte, “to finger, to touch; to play with; to toy with.” So like touch me, not just touch me.
